On January 3, 2012, approximately 200 Occupy protesters performed a flash mob at the main
concourse of New York’s Grand Central Terminal, in protest against President Obama’s signing
into law of a defense act that the protesters perceived as detrimental to civil liberties. It was
reported that three people were arrested during the flash mob, and that it was a peaceful event.

Extraordinary Convention of Peoples Liberation Front (JVP) was held yesterday (01 January)at
Debarawewa public ground, Thissamaharamaya successfully. Large number of party members

53rd Anniversary of the Victorious Cuban Revolution is celebrated by the people of Cuba on 01st January
2012.  Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista was defeated and ousted by the revolutionary army led by Fidel
Castro, Earnesto Che Guevara, Raul Castro and other revolutionary leaders on 01st January 1959. Later
Fidel Castro, the former leader of Cuba declared the 1959 revolution of Cuba as a Socialist revolution
and introduced many socialist reforms to the country. Even today Cuban people enjoy the benefits
of socialism. Although they have to face so many obstacles and sanctions imposed by USA and other
imperialists they have been able to protect the socialism in their country. We, the Socialist Youth Union

Socialist Youth Union has organized number of events for the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People from 29th November to 10th December which is held on 29th December. A public seminar on behalf of the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People was held today as one of these events. Palestine’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Dr. Anwar H. Alegha, General Secretory of Peoples Liberation Front (JVP) Comrade Tilvin Silva, National Organizer of the Socialist Youth Union Comrade Bimal Rathnyaka and a large crowd participated in this event. A campaign to collect signatures in support of Palestine organized by the Socialist Youth Union (SYU) was held near Davatagaha Mosque in Colombo yesterday (2^nd) to mark the ‘Palestine Solidarity Day’ which falls on the 29^th November.

Former JVP MP and National Organizer of the SYU Bimal Ratnayake participating in the campaign said Socialist Youth Union has been engaging in acts supporting Palestine Solidarity Day for several years. The World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) making an announcement against eh tear gas and water cannon attck on the peaceful demonstration carried out by Socialist Youth Union against the budget 2012 presented by Rajapaksa government states ‘The anti-popular budget attacks the rights of the youth and the workers and explicitly ignores the major problem of youth unemployment.’

The ‘protest march’ of the Socialist Youth Union’ was subjected to attacks of tear gas and high pressure water canon by the police a little while ago.

Five protest marchers have been injured due to the baton charge carried out by the police say reports.

The ‘protest march’ was organized to protest against the budget presented by the government for 2012 say organizers. The protesters had said they would march from Technical Junction at Maradana to the Ministry of Finance.

The tear gas and the water cannon attacks were carried out at the Lake House roundabout in Colombo Fort. Read more…

No relief has been given from President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s seventh budget to unemployed youth or graduates and employees who have lost their employment says the National Organizer of Socialist Youth Union (SYU) former Parliamentarian comrade Bimal Ratnayake.
